Taxonomy of Recent turrids
Almost all turrid genera are in need of revisions. A considerable proportion of turrids have never been authoritatively reported since their original description and their allocation to modern genera remained unknown. This is due to the extreme diversity which is complicated by the meagerness of the original descriptions and the difficulty of matching species with early original figures. Peter Stahlschmidt has spent more than 15 years to compile all original descriptions and to search and study type material directly in museums or via loan. Type photos of about 2,000 turrid species were prepared or requested. That unique data collection allows systematic revisions. So far two genera were revised: Benthofascis and Thetidos. The revision of the genus Turridrupa is currently in preparation. The sorting of material stored in MNHN, PS, MSF and LACM (partly in collaborations with other scientist) resulted so far in more than 500 turrid species that are segregated and recognized as undescribed and awaiting formal descriptions.

Analysis of the biogeography in the Indopacific by using standardised sampling of death assemblages

One of the most remarkable marine biodiversity patterns has long been recognized in the Pacific Ocean, with a Southeast Asian “hotspot” and radially decreasing latitudinal and longitudinal gradients in species richness from this area. A plethora of hypotheses have been proposed to explain that diversity pattern. Recognition of this gradient, however, is based on datasets often received in a non-standardised way, and consequently not suitable for hypothesis testing. Moreover, the focus on rather large ”flagship“ taxa (fishes or corals) may not necessary reflect diversity patterns of the entire biodiversity consisting of mainly small species. Molluscs have the largest diversity of any phylum in coral reef environments, and especially the diversity of minute species is exceedingly high. Sampling expeditions that take into account the small and rare diversity are labor- and time-consuming and were only performed in few selected areas. However, the spatial species turn-over renders it impossible to project from regional species richness numbers to whole provinces.

To overcome that difficulty P. Stahlschmidt established a standardised sediment sampling in order to examine molluscan death assemblages (DA). The fidelity of such DAs to living communities were demonstrated (e.g. Kidwell, 2008). DAs are even more diverse, due to time-averaging, making them more suitable compared to single census “live data” providing only a snapshot and hence underestimating true living diversity. Since the sampling is standardised it allows the comparison of different sites and study areas in a statistical way for testing proposed hypotheses regarding biogeographic pattern.
